Venice

The neighborhood (“sestiere”) of Venice I prefer is Castello, because it is one of the most peaceful places in town. Venice is visited by some 18 millions tourists each year and many places are often overcrowded. Luckily enough, if you have time ad ease, you can still find areas in this wonderful town that are far from the classic touristic itineraries, and where the authentic atmosphere of Venice, that makes it magic and unique, can still be deeply felt. In this town the light is pure and always perfect any time of the year. I often make a comparison with the light of Utah or New Mexico’s deserts. The lagoon’s wind makes the air so transparent that even the smallest detail is revealed with amazing sharpness. But to photograph Venice is a very tough task. You have to walk all day with the backpack on your back, in winter in freezing cold and in summer in a suffocating steamy heat. To be able to create an harmonious picture on the ground glass is a frustrating job, and many times lack of space or unpredictable intrusions make it almost impossible. To make a good negative is all but easy, like grabbing a ghost. However the wonder pouring out from the ancient palaces and the canals is so strong and irresistible that one day of photography in Venice is to stay forever in one’s memory.
