News27 May 2009 Glacier des Bossons The Bossons Glacier, on the French side of Mont Blanc, is one of the most spectacular glaciers of the Alps. In the 80s, in Chamonix, when during the summer we had some bad weather days and the weather forecast did not recommend to climb in high altitude, we went a few times among the seracs of the Bossons with ice axe and crampons, to stretch our legs a bit. In August 2004 I was back to the Glacier with my Linhof 4x5”. At that time I was no longer a professional mountaineer, but Mont Blanc and the Bossons were still a big part of my world, and in my spirit I still felt the same old love for this wonderful natural scenery. When I got there, alone, early in the morning, I had the intention not to stop too long among those sharp spires, since I knew that the ice blocks and rocks that with the temperature rising would begin to roll down. Nearly twenty years before, an enormous block had come off the seracs and had bounced several times and had turned into the direction where we stood. I had a terrible fright, never forgotten. So, while I was making the composition on the ground glass with my head under the black cloth, unable to control the situation, my senses were so alert that I was feeling as if I was making a critical climbing passage untied. The outcome of that morning I spent making photos on the Bossons are the two images that only today I am able to print for the first time in the best way. I made the mistake of overdeveloping the negatives, and this is why it took me almost five years and many attempts before succeeding to obtain the prints I feel “right” for me. Now, at last here they are: “Seracco del Bossons con Crepaccio, Gruppo del Monte Bianco, Francia”, archive number MB 04-97, and “Seracco e Morena, Ghiacciaio del Bossons, Monte Bianco, Francia”, archive number MB 04-102. I hope they can covey some of the magic of this wild place. http://www.marcobianchifotografo.com/photogallery/index.php?catId=8&p=1 |
