I recently gave Mario Giacherio, journalist and Academic Member of CAI (Italian Alpine Club) an interview which is to be published in the next issue 36 of the bimonthly magazine Meridiani Montagne dedicated to the Sassolungo Peak, on sale from 23 December. After some years I was requested to talk about Himalaya and climbing, and I have realized that not much has changed since 2000, the year I decided to stop making expeditions. After the tragedies that occurred last summer on the Nanga Parbat and K2, press and TV have refreshed their interest in climbing. Predictably enough, the world of expeditions seems to involve wide audiences only when a tragedy takes place, otherwise it is not as much “appealing”. Considering the level of inaccuracy and superficiality of the way media normally deal with this subject, maybe this is not a drawback.
