News29 November 2008 Workshop End This second workshop by John Sexton, Fine Tuning The Expressive Print, just terminated and which completes the first workshop I attended in 2005 (The Expressive Black and White Print) was above any of my expectations and proved to be extraordinarily interesting and useful. The technical part was very detailed, various and amazing for the quality and quantity of the information given (in particular it was focused on the contrast masking techniques), while the historical and cultural parts on photography were unique. John’s superb ability and precision together with his stupefying experience and sensibility have given life to five memorable days that ended with a visit to Edward Weston’s home and darkroom at Wildcat Hill, near Carmel. I will always be grateful to Kim Weston (Edward’s grandson) and his wife Gina for their most exquisite hospitality and kindness. They welcomed us at their home as if we were old friends. I never thought that one day I could see Edward Weston’s darkroom, or touch the 8x10” and 11x14” negatives by Brett Weston. In a present world where photography is experienced in a more and more superficial and approximate way, the work of the Masters of today and of the past represents a valuable example for all the lovers of this expressive form, an example to remember and to bear in mind in our daily work. Since Brett Weston in Italy is not a popular name, I recommend especially to my Italian colleagues to visit the website of the Brett Weston Archive, founded with the aim to catalogue the marvellous work of this authentic genius who died fifteen years ago. http://www.brettwestonarchive.com |
